Frequently Asked Questions
General
Where do you provide services?
We offer multiple options for service delivery to best meet the needs of our clients and families. We are primarily a mobile outpatient practice, with clinicians providing in-home services throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. For clients who prefer to receive services outside of the home, we also offer in-person therapy at our Overland Park and Lee’s Summit offices, based on clinician availability. In addition, we provide teletherapy, allowing clients to access services virtually using a desktop computer or iPad. Our therapists are licensed in both Kansas and Missouri, making access to services as seamless as possible. Service location and format are determined collaboratively, taking into account clinical needs, availability, and other relevant factors.
What insurance companies are you in-network with? Will you be adding insurance groups in the future?
We accept Traditional Medicare and its supplements. For all other insurances, we are considered an out-of-network provider, including with Medicare Advantage plans. For those out-of-network, we provide clients with a "superbill" as a statement of services that can be submitted for reimbursement. We recommend you contact your insurance provider before beginning services to check your personal benefits.
Do you require an evaluation to begin services?
If you, your child, or your loved one has had a recent evaluation in an area of concern, we may be able to use the findings from that evaluation to guide our treatment planning. This is determined on a case-by-case basis.
Pediatric Services
If my child receives services through their school or Missouri First Steps, should we still do private speech, feeding, or swallowing therapy?
Many children will benefit from additional one-on-one private therapy services. At Speech & Swallowing Speciliatists of KC, we provide services in-home and dedicate time to coaching parents to help children make the most gains as efficiently as possible.
Mobile FeeS
What is a "Mobile FEES?"
"Mobile" means that the experts come to you at your convenience. FEES stands for "Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing."
My doctor recommended a "swallow study." Would a Mobile FEES count?
Yes. A FEES is a type of swallow study that gives you objective, real-time information about how you swallow including your risk for aspiration.
But my doctor recommended a "modified barium swallow" or "video swallow." Is that the same as a Mobile FEES?
There are differences between the two studies, however FEES is just as accurate at identifying your choking risk as a video swallow, all without needing a trip to the doctor's office.
